Record-breaking Renewal Rates at the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)

Oct. 25, 2024

For the second consecutive year, a record number of registrants renewed their permits with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) to continue practising nursing in Alberta. The CRNA leverages technology and embraces fair and equitable registration processes to make registering and renewing a permit simple and efficient for qualified individuals.

Registrants, including registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), are required to renew their permits with the CRNA on an annual basis to continue practising in Alberta.

  • 44,798 registrants renewed their permits for the 2024-2025 practice year. This includes:
    • 43,856 registered nurses
    • 933 nurse practitioners
  • 4,449 more registrants renewed their permits compared to the 2023-2024 renewal period, an increase of 11 per cent. NP renewals saw a 15 per cent increase.
  • In addition to the 44,798 renewed permits, 5,432 registrants moved to the non-practising register from which they can return to practice at any time.

"Alberta’s government is proud to recognize the remarkable achievement of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) in reaching record numbers of permit renewals. This milestone highlights CRNA's dedication to ensuring Alberta’s nursing professionals can continue providing safe, competent, and compassionate care. With this growth, our healthcare system will continue to be strengthened, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration with CRNA to support this critical work."

- Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health

"We are pleased to see continued growth in permit renewals. The robust number of registrants eligible to practise in Alberta is a significant achievement and a positive outcome for the health care ecosystem."

- Joy Peacock, CEO & Registrar, CRNA

Outside of renewal, nurses continue to join the CRNA's register for various reasons throughout the year, this includes: recent graduates, transfers from other Canadian and international jurisdictions, and those who choose to return to practice after taking a leave.

Renewal is one of the ways the CRNA protects the public, ensuring registrants continue to provide safe, competent and ethical care in Alberta.
