Albertan regulatory colleges work with the government to create accountability mechanisms within the health system. Colleges are responsible for regulating their registrants within this legislative framework. The Health Profession Act (HPA) outlines the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is responsible for registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), certified graduate nurses (CGNs), graduate nurses (GNs) and graduate nurse practitioners (GNPs).

The CRNA endeavours to ensure that our registrants provide safe, competent and ethical nursing care by:

  • Setting the profession's entrance qualifications
  • Approving nursing education programs
  • Issuing permits to those who meet the requirements
  • Developing and enforcing nursing standards
  • Ensuring that registrants maintain competence
  • Taking action when a complaint about a registrant's practice is received
