Council and Governance

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta's (CRNA) Council is responsible for overseeing College activities and holding the CRNA accountable for its responsibilities under the Health Professions Act (HPA).

Council Representatives

In accordance with the CRNA’s bylaws, Council is to be composed of 16 individuals known as councillors; half are registrant members appointed by Council through a competency-based selection process and half are public members appointed by the Government of Alberta.

Roles and Responsibilities

Council

Councillors meet on a quarterly basis and they are responsible for:

  • Developing and overseeing policies that direct the CRNA in meeting its mandate to govern the profession in the public's interest
  • Setting the CRNA's strategic direction
  • Overseeing the CRNA's pension plan

Council delegates day-to-day work of some of the legislative responsibilities to three governance committees, six regulatory committees and one standing committee. 

Committees 

There are three types of committees accountable to Council: 

  • Governance committees (comprised of councillors): Finance and Audit, Leadership Review and Governance, and Nominating
  • Regulatory committees : Registration, Registration Review, Complaint Review, Hearing Tribunal, Appeals, and Competence
  • Standing committee: Pension Compliance
