Director, Data Governance & Analytics

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) regulates the nursing profession in Alberta in the public interest, ensuring Albertans receive safe, competent and ethical nursing care through licensure, professional practice standards and regulatory oversight. The Opportunity

The CRNA is seeking a strategic and collaborative Director, Data Governance & Analytics to develop and evolve the organization's data governance, analytics, business intelligence and regulatory reporting capabilities.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative & Financial Officer, this role champions the use of data across the enterprise, ensuring analytics, performance measurement, and integrated reporting are aligned with organizational priorities, regulatory obligations, and operational realities. The Director will build consensus and ensure insights and reporting frameworks are co-developed with, and owned across, the organization. Central to this role is building a collective capacity to understand, question and use data well at every level.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with leaders and teams across the organization to strengthen data governance, improve reporting and performance measurement, and transform data into meaningful insights that support the CRNA's mandate of protecting the public through nursing regulation.

The CRNA’s Technology & Analytics Environment

The Director will play a key role in shaping the future direction of the platform and supporting the organization's growing analytics maturity. Key components include:

Microsoft Azure cloud platform
Microsoft Power BI as the primary reporting and visualization tool
SQL-based data architecture and reporting environment
Enterprise data governance and data quality initiatives
Ongoing development of a business intelligence environment focused on scalability and self-service reporting
Expansion of dimensional modeling and star-schema design to support enterprise reporting and advanced analytics
Growing the use of AI-assisted features to support reporting, forecasting and data exploration

Enterprise Analytics Strategy and Enablement

Champion and evolve an enterprise analytics strategy aligned with organizational priorities, regulatory obligations and operational needs, building shared ownership across teams.
Translate regulatory and organizational objectives into prioritized analytics initiatives with clear outcomes.
Scan the external environment, including peer regulators and emerging practice, to keep pace with leading approaches.
Foster a culture of evidence-informed decision-making and growing data literacy throughout the organization.

Tools, Infrastructure and Data Governance

Provide strategic direction on analytical tools, platforms and data technology decisions in alignment with the broader technology environment.
Collaborate with IT on infrastructure including data pipelines, warehousing and visualization, and set standards for analytical rigour.
Champion data governance practices including standards, definitions and accountabilities, in partnership with teams responsible for privacy legislation, reporting standards and records management.

Capability Building and Partner Engagement

Develop, lead, and coach a high-performing analytics and reporting function.
Develop and implement an analytics maturity roadmap that strengthens data literacy and self-service reporting across teams.
Build trusted relationships with senior leaders, operational teams and Council so analytics and reporting are viewed as shared assets.
Facilitate consensus on reporting priorities and performance narratives and communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as data analytics, business, economics, statistics, public administration or a related discipline. A professional designation in a related field is considered an asset.

Experience

Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in analytics, business intelligence, corporate reporting or a related field, including demonstrated leadership experience in a multi-partner environment, with a high level of expertise and understanding in data governance, business intelligence and performance measurement practices.

Skills and Competencies

Analytics and Business Intelligence: Strong background in business intelligence, data visualization, dashboarding and performance indicator analysis, with hands-on familiarity with Power BI and SQL-based environments.
Data Governance and Stewardship: Highly skilled in developing and applying data governance standards, definitions and accountabilities across systems.
Strategic and Systems Thinking: Able to translate complex regulatory and operational data into enterprise-wide insight and align analytics with organizational strategy.
Consensus Building and Partner Engagement: Builds alignment across business units without relying on positional authority and communicates effectively with diverse audiences.
Analytics Tools and Infrastructure: Sound judgment in evaluating and recommending tools and platforms in alignment with organizational capacity and IT strategy.
Leadership and Team Development: Committed to coaching, developing others, change leadership and empowering teams.
Regulatory Awareness: Understanding of the regulatory environment and how analytics supports public protection and organizational accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in regulation, healthcare, public sector, professional governance or not-for-profit environments.
Experience supporting executive and board-level decision-making.
Experience leading modernization, transformation or analytics maturity initiatives.
