Renewal Readiness: Currency of Practice

June 5, 2026

To receive or renew a permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), all applicants and registrants — including those looking to return to practice — must meet the currency of practice requirement.

There is more than one way to meet this requirement, and the options depend on whether an individual is registered with the CRNA as a registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP). Full details on meeting this requirement are available on the Currency of Practice page, with supplemental information on the What Counts as Practice Hours page.

Registrants are responsible for keeping accurate records of their nursing hours for five practice years. The CRNA's practice year runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.

After reviewing the information provided at the links above, if you have questions about the Currency of Practice requirement, you can reach out to the CRNA for practice guidance.

*There are some exceptions for courtesy and provisional permits.
