Feedback Needed on Standards and Guidelines

The CRNA regularly asks for input from the public as it develops and revises the standards and guidelines to ensure they are evidence informed and align with best practice.

The CRNA is seeking feedback on the draft scope of practice and standard of practice referenced below. They are intended to:

  • update the existing scope of practice document for nurse practitioners (NPs)
  • update an existing draft standard of practice for registered nurses (RNs) and NPs
  • provide direction that is clear, concise and which outlines what the public can expect from registrants in providing safe, competent and ethical care

The deadline to provide feedback for each of the following draft documents is Dec. 3, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MT.

Before any new or revised standard of practice takes effect, they must be approved by the CRNA's Council. If you have questions, please contact standards@nurses.ab.ca

This document applies to nurse practitioners (NPs), neonatal NPs, and graduate NPs (GNPs). This document outlines the scope of practice for registrants in Alberta. Its purpose is to protect the public through clear, consistent expectations about what registrants are educated, authorized and competent to do. It applies whenever registrants plan, provide, or evaluate care, decide to enter a new area of practice or perform restricted activities in any practice setting.

This document explains when and why registrants may provide care. It sets the limits of practice through legislation, standard of practice and regulations and confirms that registrants are accountable to both the registered nurse (RN) and NP scope of practice. It clarifies that practice settings and local requirements may restrict how or where services are delivered but cannot expand scope beyond what legislation and regulations permit. Individual competence determines what each registrant may safely provide.

This standard applies to registered nurses and nurse practitioners. The purpose of this standard is to outline expectations for registrants providing professional services through communication or information technology. These standards must be met to ensure registrants provide safe, competent and ethical care and adhere to all legislative and regulatory requirements when using virtual care.

Note: draft amendments are highlighted in yellow.
