Pathways to a Permit

Are you looking to come into Alberta to practice temporarily?

Practising temporarily in Alberta is limited to one of the following scenarios:

  • Assisting in emergencies or disaster relief efforts
  • Volunteer activity
  • Research activity, where the primary research activity is in another jurisdiction, and the research requires direct access to clients or has ethical implications for human participants
  • Educational clinical practicum (e.g., a nurse practitioner, clinical care or emergency nursing certificate program)
  • Contract as a teaching staff member in an Alberta nursing education program
  • Job action disrupting health-care services
  • Training or certification activity not related to a formal educational clinical practicum

Temporary employment contracts, including agency of travel nurse assignments, are not valid scenarios for practising temporarily in Alberta, unless related to an emergency or disaster. If you are seeking to register for a temporary employment contract, select No.
