Good Character and Reputation

You must demonstrate good character and reputation to be registered with the CRNA by providing a response of “no” to the all the following questions:

  • Have you been disciplined or had conditions imposed due to unprofessional conduct by a nursing or professional body other than the CRNA?
  • Have you had your registration or licence denied, revoked, cancelled or suspended due to unprofessional conduct by a nursing or professional body other than the CRNA?
  • Have you pled guilty, or been found guilty of a criminal offence inside Canada or an offence of similar nature outside Canada?
  • Have you had a judgment in a civil action against you with respect to nursing practice?

In addition, applicants for initial registration are required to complete a criminal record check.

Registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) who are returning to practice do not need to complete a criminal record check.

The CRNA does not accept vulnerable sector checks in place of criminal record checks.

Evidence to Satisfy the Requirement

  • Application Type: Initial registration, equivalent jurisdiction, substantial equivalence (applicants who reside in Canada)
  • Criminal record checks are conducted online via a third party as part of the application process at no cost to the applicant.
  • Application Type: Substantial equivalence (applicants who reside outside of Canada)
  • If your government-issued ID lists an address outside of Canada, you will need to submit a criminal record check from your local law enforcement agency.
  • Reach out to the CRNA via the contact form at the bottom of this page to complete this step.
  • Application Type: Substantial Equivalence
  • A verification of registration is confirmation from a regulatory body that you have a current permit in good standing.
  • To satisfy this requirement, you will request your current regulatory body to send a verification directly to the CRNA.
  • Application Type: Equivalent jurisdictions
  • In the application, you will enter details about your current jurisdiction.

Requirement Not Met Outcomes

An applicant will have their application escalated to the registrar for review in any of the following situations:

  • Responds “yes” to any of the questions.
  • Registration verification indicates that the applicant:
    • Is undergoing an investigation or is subject to an unprofessional conduct process.
    • Has ever been disciplined.
    • Has had conditions imposed due to unprofessional conduct.
  • Whose criminal record check indicated a history of criminal charge and/or conviction.
