My Learning Space

my-learning-space

My Learning Space is an online platform that offers nursing education in protecting the public. Advance your professional development and competence with important education that impacts your nursing practice.

With each course you complete, you can print or save a completion certificate. We recommend using Chrome.

My Learning Space is accessible to registrants with an active, practicing status. Those with a non-active status (e.g., retired, associate, former) do not have access.

Course/resource catalogue

Jurisprudence – 2020 (mandatory for initial applicants)

  • In this course, you will learn the regulatory framework that guides nursing practice under the Health Professions Act (HPA). This framework enables you to understand how the HPA, Registered Nurses Profession Regulation, standards of practice, bylaws and organizational policies impact and support nursing practice in Alberta.
  • This course is a mandatory requirement for initial applicants and voluntary for all other registrants.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on each chapter quiz.

Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Misconduct (mandatory)

  • This course explores Bill 21: An Act to Protect Patients. The purpose of the course is to outline expectations for the nurse and their relationship with a patient in order to strengthen the protection of patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct by nurses.
  • This course is a mandatory requirement for initial applicants starting Oct. 1, 2020. It is also a mandatory requirement for all registrants prior to permit renewal in 2021-22.
  • A course completion certificate is issued by completing all course components and achieving a grade of 100% on the final quiz. 

Amplifying Nursing Leadership across Alberta Conference Recordings

  • To continue CARNA’s work with advancing nursing leadership, and to celebrate The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, CARNA held a virtual conference on Jun. 3, 2020. You can find all the recorded presentations and associated materials here.
  • This resource does not issue a certificate of completion.

Duty to Provide Care

  • What does the responsibility to provide safe, competent, compassionate and ethical care to clients look like in situations of moral distress? This module is in an escape room format where the following concepts within the context of a duty to provide care will be addressed: duty to provide care; conscientious objection; unsafe practice situations; and job action.
  • A course completion certificate is issued when all course content has been reviewed.

Early Experiences and Brain Development

  • This recorded webinar explores how early childhood experiences affect brain development. Topics include how social interactions are critical to how brain circuits form and mature; experiences that promote healthy brain architecture; toxic stress; and adverse childhood experiences and its effects on learning, social and health outcomes including addictions. This webinar corresponds with the Alberta Family Wellness "Brain Story" certification course Family Wellness "Brain Story" certification course.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.

Infection Prevention and Control - 2020

  • Infection prevention and control interventions and activities that are implemented, minimize and eliminate the potential spread of infection in the practice environment. This gamification course consists of four modules: hand hygiene; screening and risk assessment; medication and vaccine injection safety; and reusable and single-use medical devices.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.

Information and Communication Technologies in Nursing Practice

  • This module covers how Entry-Level Competencies for the Practice of Registered Nurses - which integrates informatics competencies by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, are necessary to ensure safe, competent and ethical nursing practice using information and communication technologies.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.

Medication Management

  • This course integrates the Medication Management Standards (CARNA, 2020) to provide a regulatory perspective of various components of safe and effective medication management in the practice setting.
  • Learning is grounded in the foundational Practice Standards for Regulated Members (CARNA, 2013) and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses (2017). 
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on each of the four quizzes.

My Learning Plan Instructional Guide

  • In January 2020, CARNA launched its redesigned and simplified My Continuing Competence Program (MyCCP) record. This guide covers changes that have been made to the MyCCP record, including how to successfully and easily complete and submit your learning plan.
  • This resource does not issue a certificate of completion.

Nursing Informatics 101

  • This introductory module covers nursing and health informatics, allows nurses to reflect and describe how informatics affects client care, and lists resources to further learning.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.

Privacy and Management of Health Information

  • In this course, you will learn professional responsibilities when managing health information, and Health Information Act (HIA) requirements for custodians and affiliates of health information. As you progress through this course, you will become more familiar with the HIA and professional standards for privacy and management of health information (CARNA’s Privacy and Management of Health Information Standards).
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on each chapter quiz.

Professional Boundaries

  • Professional boundaries establish the therapeutic behaviour of a nurse to ensure safe and respectful client care. This module is in an escape room format and; outlines the therapeutic nurse-client relationship, describes the expectations for an appropriate therapeutic relationship, explores boundary crossings and violations, and learners will conduct a self-assessment.
  • A course completion certificate is issued when all course content has been reviewed.

Stand Up for Standards

  • This resource will provide registrants with an in-depth understanding of the CARNA Practice Standards for Regulated Members and how each standard applies to nursing practice.
  • This resource does not issue a certificate of completion. 

Stronger Together: Learning Through Indigenous Perspectives

  • This course focuses on increasing knowledge of Indigenous people through reflection and story-telling methods, and promotes nursing care that is compassionate and trauma-informed towards Indigenous peoples in Alberta. Our goal is for all registrants in Alberta to utilize these new understandings and knowledge in ways that ultimately improve nursing care broadly.
  • A course completion certificate is issued when all five chapters have been completed.

The Essentials of Nursing Documentation

  • This course covers the skills and knowledge needed for proficient nursing documentation. Topics include legal and professional obligations; methods of documentation; principles of objective and effective documentation; documentation errors; reporting errors; and the course lists resources to further learning.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.

Unlock the Leader in You

  • This gamification module promotes leadership thinking and recognition of your personal leadership qualities, attributes and skills. This module allows for learning leadership competencies as it relates to CARNA’s practice standards.
  • A course completion certificate is issued with a grade of 70% or higher on the final quiz.
