Immunization
Immunizations protect individuals and communities through the prevention of disease and illness. It is one of the cornerstones of public health protection. All registered nurses have a responsibility to ensure the safety of Albertans who are eligible for, or who have received, a vaccine. This includes ensuring vaccines are stored correctly, assessing the eligibility for a vaccine, administering a vaccine safely, or reporting an adverse reaction or cold chain break.
On January 1, 2021, new electronic reporting requirements became effective as outlined in the amendments to the Public Health Act and Immunization Regulations that came into force on December 17, 2018. The Immunization Regulation outlines the responsibilities for registered nurses and other health care professionals regarding the administration of vaccines and vaccine programs, and assist in standardizing practices for all immunization providers, regardless of whether a vaccine is provincially funded or privately purchased.
