After May 1, 2019, applicants who wish to practise in Alberta must complete an eLearning course on jurisprudence before receiving a practice permit.
The course is also available to CARNA members to support their ongoing professional learning through My Learning Space in MyCARNA.
By completing the jurisprudence course, applicants gain greater knowledge of the regulatory framework that guides nursing practice in Alberta. It highlights self-regulation and how laws, standards and organizational policies impact nursing practice. Ultimately, awareness of nursing jurisprudence assists to uphold public safety, assist in the provision of safe and ethical care, and outline scope of nursing practice.
There are a total of seven chapters. You will need approximately 15-20 minutes to complete each chapter.
Each chapter has an “open-book” quiz at the end which may be taken as many times as needed to achieve a minimum score of 70 per cent. You will receive a certificate of completion when you successfully complete all chapter review questions.
Advance preparation is not required. All the information to successfully complete the chapter quiz is included in each chapter. You may enter and leave the course anytime, with your work saved.
