Make a complaint

It is CARNA’s responsibility to address complaints related to the professional conduct of individual registered nurses, graduate nurses, nurse practitioners, graduate nurse practitioners and certified graduate nurses. Other Health Practitioners are the responsibility of their respective College. All complaints are processed under Health Professions Act.

Anyone can file a complaint about a registered nurse’s conduct.

To submit a complaint:

You have two options to submit your complaint. If multiple registered nurses were involved, submit separate complaints for each, identifying the role of each individual as it relates to your complaint. Each complaint will be addressed separately.

  • Option 1: Complete the online complaint form by entering all applicable fields.  If there is insufficient space to list all incidents or to provide requested information, please send in the information in an attachment

    • Complaint form for members of the public (e.g., patients, family members of a patient, nurses, co-workers, etc.)
    • Complaint form for employers

Save the form and print. Please sign and date the form and email, mail, or fax the completed form or your letter to:

    • Email: procond@nurses.ab.ca
    • Mail:

      Attention: Complaints Director
College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
      11120–178 Street
      Edmonton, AB T5S 1P2

      Confidential fax: 780.453.0546

  • Option 2: Write a letter to the Complaints Director. Your complaint letter must include a brief description of the registered nurse's behaviour that you believe constitutes unprofessional conduct.

Address the letter to the above address to the Attention of the Complaints Director.

The complaint management process may take several months depending on the complexity and severity of the complaint. Often the quickest way to resolve an issue is to discuss the concern directly with the registered nurse, the registered nurse's supervisor or other health-care providers at the facility first.

If you are unsure or want guidance regarding submission of a complaint, please call us at 780.451.0043 or 1.800.252.9392 and ask for the Conduct Department or email procond@nurses.ab.ca.
