Feedback Needed on Standards - Consultation Extended

March 14, 2023

The CRNA regularly asks for input from the public as it develops and revises the standards and guidelines to ensure they are evidence informed and align with best practice.

Survey Extended

On March 9, 2023, legislation to extend the temporary exclusion of eligibility for persons suffering solely from a mental illness received royal assent and immediately came into force. As a result, persons whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness and who meet all other eligibility criteria will now be eligible for MAID in Canada as of March 17, 2024.

  • Due to this change, the CRNA will be extending its timeframe for consultation on the draft of Medical Assistance in Dying Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners to April 16 at 11:59 p.m.
  • Thank you to those who have already provided us feedback; however, you are welcome to use the extended consultation time to provide any additional feedback.

Draft Medical Assistance in Dying Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners

The CRNA encourages the public, stakeholders, and all registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in Alberta to provide their suggestions and comments on the proposed draft Medical Assistance in Dying Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners through this survey.

Amendments to these standards are to address the legislative changes to medical assistance in dying (MAID) under Bill C-7, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying), related to MAID eligibility for individuals with a mental disorder as their sole underlying medical condition. The CRNA is aware Bill C-39,  An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying), had third reading in the House of Commons on Feb. 15, 2023. This enactment would delay, until March 17, 2024, the repeal of the exclusion from eligibility for receiving MAID in circumstances where the sole underlying medical condition identified in support of the request for MAID is a mental disorder.

The following amendments were made to the standards:

  • Addition of criterion 1.3 to clearly outline the safeguards within the Criminal Code of Canada to determine eligibility for MAID
  • Addition of criterion 1.4 to ensure client capacity for MAID
  • Revisions to provide clarity regarding completion of the Alberta Health Services MAID reporting form to fulfil federal reporting requirements

This survey will close on April 16, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.
