On May 31, 2022, Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022 (formerly Bill 10) received royal assent and came into effect. The amendment requires regulatory colleges in Alberta, including the CRNA, to adopt a standard of practice that addresses female genital mutilation by their registrants.
To respond to this amendment, the CRNA focused and limited revisions specific to expectations regarding female genital mutilation (FGM) to the draft Practice Standards for Registrants and will come into effect upon the date on which the relevant sections of the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2020 (No. 2) comes into force.
The following amendments were made to the CRNA draft Practice Standards for Registrants:
The addition of a statement outlining consequences for registrants who have been convicted of a criminal offence related to the procurement or performance of FGM, removal from practice and non-eligibility for registration.
The addition of a new indicator, 1.11, prohibiting of the procurement or performance of FGM.
The addition of a new indicator, 1.12, required reporting of regulated members who procure or perform FGM.
The addition of Glossary terms for 'female genital mutilation' and 'reasonable grounds'.
We are asking for your input on the highlighted sections within the document to ensure these clearly outline expectations for registrants.
Deadline: Feb. 12 at 11:59 p.m.
