Prescribing CDS for nurse practitioners
The College grants authorization for Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Graduate Nurse Practitioners (GNP) to prescribe controlled drugs and substances (CDS) in compliance with the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and in accordance with the New Classes of Practitioners Regulations.
To be able to prescribe CDS in Alberta, including those monitored under TPP Alberta, an NP or GNP must successfully complete requirements and be authorized by the College. CDS cannot be prescribed until notification from the College is received.
Alberta NP graduates
Alberta NP education after 2015 includes CDS prescribing education and incorporates the CDS jurisprudence relevant to Alberta. All new graduates from an approved entry-level NP program in Alberta must meet the requirements to prescribe CDS.
NP applicants from other jurisdictions
New NP applicants educated outside of Alberta must meet the following requirements according to policies approved by the College’s registration committee.
1. Complete a CDS prescribing education course
a. If your entry-level NP education outside Alberta included CDS education, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to determine if the program meets our requirements.
b. If your NP education did not include CDS education, complete only one of the following courses to meet the CDS requirement:
- Prescription and Management of Controlled Drugs and Substances from Athabasca University
- CDSA Module (PHAR-1604) from Saskatchewan Polytechnic
- Prescribing Narcotics and Controlled Substances from the University of Ottawa/Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing
Once the course is completed, please email the course completion certificate to email@example.com.
2. Complete the CDS Jurisprudence Module to meet the CDS Jurisprudence requirement
In general, the CDS requirements must be met prior to the approval of an NP or GNP practice permit. It is an expectation that all NPs complete the CDS education, regardless of prescribing practice. On the assessment of an application, a condition may be placed on an NP or GNP practice permit restricting the individual from prescribing CDS until these requirements have been met.
Expectations and accountabilities of an NP when prescribing CDS are outlined in the prescribing standards for NPs. NPs are accountable and responsible for continuing their competence about prescribing CDS.
