The Continuing Competence program is expanded to include these three components:
Since the current Registered Nurses Profession Regulation was proclaimed in November of 2005, we have received many requests to explore changing restricted activity authorizations of registered nurses, specifically related to RN prescribing and the ordering of diagnostic tests.
We are now moving forward with RN prescribing and ordering of diagnostic tests in order to optimize the practice of registered nurses and nurse practitioners, enable system change, increase access to care as well as increase system efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
We have been working with government since the fall of 2010 on drafting the proposed changes to the Regulation. We are now at the point where Alberta Health is initiating a stakeholder consultation on the proposed revisions to the RN regulation.
We have received feedback from stakeholders and we are working with Alberta Health and stakeholders to address concerns and finalize the changes to the Regulation.
CARNA Provincial Council will approve the final wording of the Regulation, and then it will go to the Alberta Cabinet for approval. Once approved, it will go to the Lieutenant Governor for proclamation. Please keep an eye on your AB RN Online enewsletter and Alberta RN magazine for updates on the changes to the regulation.
We have brought together a multidisciplinary advisory committee to provide advice, expertise and feedback on the implementation of RN prescribing and ordering of diagnostic tests.
The committee provides an opportunity for a broad range of representatives to identify issues in our proposed revisions to the Registered Nurse Profession Regulation that may impact RN prescribing and identify approaches to address the issues. Committee members will also help ensure our requirements, standards of practice and competencies for RN prescribing and ordering of diagnostic tests are easily understood and practical.
