Today, Monday July 6, 2020, the Government of Alberta (GOA) introduced an omnibus Bill, titled Bill 30 Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2020.
Bill 30 is of keen interest to CARNA (and all regulators of health professions) because of a specific section that directs them (by law) to increase the number of public representatives on college councils, hearing tribunals and complaint review committees from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.
The public will now be equal in numbers and influence as the profession when all important policy decisions are being made.
“CARNA believes the voice of patients and their families is critical when setting healthcare policy and supports any government direction that legitimizes this voice.” Dennie Hycha, CARNA President.
CARNA is the regulatory college and professional association for Alberta's more than 38,000 registered nurses, as well as nurse practitioners. CARNA exists so that the public is assured of safe, competent, ethical nursing care and excellence in nursing practice.
