On May 1, 2019, new regulations are coming in to effect which include some changes to the application process.
If you already hold a temporary permit, CARNA will contact you with more information about how your permit will be affected by these changes.
MORE EXAM ATTEMPTS
Applicants will have the opportunity to write the exam as many times as they are able for up to two years after completing their initial program. However, NCLEX has a policy that candidates can only take the exam every 45 days to ensure they do not see the same question again.
Applicants may be eligible to apply for a provisional permit which will allow them to practise while they fulfill the requirements of RN or NP registration. Provisional registration may be granted for up to 12 months within the first 24 months after program completion, and have the following conditions:
Indirect remote supervision: an RN or NP is readily available by phone or on another adjacent unit.
Applicants who fail the NCLEX once may have the condition of indirect supervision. This means an RN or NP is on the unit or in the same location where the care is provided for guidance and consultation, but is not directly at the side of the graduate nurse. In community health settings or in home care, the RN or NP must be physically present in the clinic setting or in the client’s home.
Pass the NCLEX. Important! If an applicant fails the exam twice, they will have their provisional registration cancelled until they pass the exam. If an applicant has already attempted the NCLEX twice, they will not be eligible for a provisional permit.
Complete the jurisprudence requirement.
Applicants will need to complete an eLearning course on jurisprudence before receiving a practice permit. By completing the course, applicants gain greater knowledge of self-regulation and how laws, standards and organizational policies guide and impact nursing practice in Alberta.
The course is also available to CARNA members to support their ongoing professional learning. The elearning module can be found by accessing My Learning Space in MyCARNA.
