The LFE research project sought to use evidence to improve the efficiency of the internationally educated nurse (IEN) application for registration process while upholding CARNA's commitment to public safety and to the principles of fairness and transparency.
The project consisted of a statistical analysis of four years of application data to identify evidence to inform policies and practices in the IEN application for registration process. The changes were implemented in August 2013, and statistical analyses and stakeholder consultations were conducted to evaluate the changes.
Additionally, the LFE Research Team conducted a number of supporting activities to enhance the understanding of ineligibility, evaluate Substantially Equivalent Competency (SEC) Assessment results in relation to the wider IEN application for registration process, understand the rationale behind choices made in relation to the option to complete an SEC Assessment or proceed directly to bridging education, facilitate the dissemination of the project methodology, and evaluate the implementation and impact of the project.
The project was led by CARNA, in collaboration with Mount Royal University and the University of Alberta, from 2011-2016. Funding for the project was provided by Alberta Health through Health Canada’s Internationally Educated Health Professionals Initiative.
