Continuing Competence

CARNA’s Continuing Competence Program (CCP) requirements are mandatory for all individuals holding or applying for RN, NP or CGN practice permits.

The CCP requirements are completed on an ongoing basis throughout each practice year.

Members applying for or renewing RN, NP or CGN practice permits report selected indicators for professional development for the upcoming practice year. At registration/renewal for the subsequent practice year, members report on the implementation of the completed year’s learning plan(s) and any influence the learning had on their nursing practice.

CARNA’s CCP requirements are directly linked with active practice. Members applying for or holding a CARNA RN, NP or CGN practice permit for any portion of a practice year must report on CCP activities. Competence conditions are imposed on a member’s practice if the member does not provide evidence of having met the continuing competence program requirements.

CCP Resources

The Reference Manual for RNs and CGNs and Reference Manual for NPs provide detailed information about the CARNA CCP.

  • Continuing Competence Worksheets and Forms are available to help you complete and document all steps of the continuing competence process.

  • Education sessions are regularly offered around the province. These sessions are designed to help you understand the reflective practice process, demonstrate how to document your CCP activities and provide information about the annual questionnaire and document audit process.
